Govt launches unsafe building crackdown

The government has launched a crackdown on unsafe buildings as part of its ongoing response to the Grenfell tragedy.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has published a Major Construction Products White Paper to improve safety standards in the sector.

This includes proposals to strengthen construction products used in buildings, with these to be properly assessed before being used.

According to the MHCLG, only a third of construction products are regulated.

A forthcoming consultation will set out plans to improve regulatory cover for these products and the government is planning to introduce legislation later this year.

This white paper coincides with the first annual report on implementation of recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.

Over 2,100 buildings have since started or completed remediation in line with the inquiry’s recommendations.

The inquiry set out 58 recommendations and the government expects 70% of these to be completed by the end of the year.

“The Grenfell fire was a tragedy that must never be repeated,” said housing secretary Steve Reed.

“Everyone should feel safe in their home.

“We are making progress implementing the Inquiry recommendations, but there is more to do as we continue to learn and act on the mistakes of the past.”

Interim chief construction advisor, Thouria Istephan, added: The announcements today show the important ongoing work to reform and improve the complex regulatory system.

We must strive to continue to make lasting and progressive changes that improve the safety and quality of both new and existing buildings and, crucially, place people who live and work in buildings at the centre of our thinking.”
